Ever attend training only to listen to someone talk about war stories and seemingly never get to the “meat” of the subject matter. Usually with the excuse of “if we had the equipment then we would…”

Hazardous materials training has been a passion for us at STCI since the beginning. In 1993 we where contracted to preform some HazWOpER refresher training. We discussed the mission of the personnel needing the training as well as the foundation training they had received. We customized a refresher training based on the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be refreshed as well as the regulatory mandated topics as well. Sounds logical, sure.
Recently one of the STCI team attended an 80 hour initial training only to find out that nearly no equipment was available for the training, even worse was the fact that the equipment needed to preform proficiencies was not available.

When scheduling your initial or refresher training ask the hard questions. What is the schedule of events for the training? What are the qualifications of the instructors? What equipment will you be needing or bringing with you for the initial or refresher training?

Hazmat training is logistically intensive. Its not cheap nor easy. If your instructor(s) are showing up with the ability to carry everything for class under their arms with no help – you are not meeting the needs of your HazWOpER and emergency response personnel.
