With any special event, especially ones that are on the national security event level require extensive coordination.

Having worked on many national and international special events (G8 Conference, Papal Visits, Superbowl’s, Olympics and a few world series) I have an appreciation for large scale special event coordination.

Over the past two weeks our old 7Ps adage was hard at work trying to coordinate many stakeholders to protect the fans of Major League Baseball. The challenges are ones that not only have a logistic footprint but a roles and responsibilities one. Having a good plan in place along with solid knowledge of the KSAs (Knowledge – Skills – Abilities) of the organizations that will be participating. This time our small team was tasked with Biological detection and troubleshooting (back up to Radiation as well as our KSA’s where strong in that area) Interfacing with the 7th CST was key as we had an onsite lab to run PCR, GC/MS and various other technologies to aid us in our decision making.

Do not forget to do some JIT (Just – In – Time) refresher training on your technologies as you bring others into the fold. Review of units of measure (and the auto-scaling nature of some types of units) may provide you with a clear picture of what you are dealing with.

Please note the level of false positive results in some technologies as not to over escalate an event, erroneously ruining a good time for a large group of fans.
